SHARK attack: Bob Barker Gives $1M to Anti-Hunting Group

Remember how former “Price is Right” host Bob Barker gave one million dollars to a group that’s seeking to end live pigeon shoots? (link) I’m not arguing in favor of pigeon shoots, but I am in favor of hunting and wanted to point out that the group seeks an end to hunting altogether- fromt their website (link):

SHARK is a non-profit organization with supporters around the US and beyond. SHARK receives no government funding and completely relies on donations and grants to work on issues ranging in scope from local to worldwide.
SHARK was honored when Bizarro creator, Dan Piraro, captured this facet of our work.

With a small core of volunteers, and a staff of three (two are part-time), SHARK battles tirelessly against bullfighting, pigeon shoots, turkey shoots, canned hunts (and all hunting), rodeos, circuses, zoos, and marine parks… any issue that involves violation of the innate rights of living creatures.

SHARK also conducts animal rescues and education projects. Steve Hindi has an open invitation to debate “the opposition”. Because of his domination of past debates with animal abusers, however, it has been years since the opposition has been foolish enough to take him on.

Just another Hollyweird-progressive who wants to tell you bozos in flyover country who made him rich what to do with your lives.  They’ll pick away at the people doing stuff like pigeon shoots, but they want recreational hunting and fishing to end.  That’s the lens that I look through the recent news about Obama’s environmental council seeking to limit fishery use. (link) Oh yeah, I’m just a paranoid tea partier…

Gun-Grabbers Taking the Fight To Central PA

As we mentioned earlier this week, Bryan Miller of Ceasefire New Jersey is now operating in the red ”T” of Pennsylvania.  Notably, the Brady Center (aka handgun control) is going there too, supporting the Lebanon County Sheriff’s Office’s legal defense in the case of the mom who was humiliated and had her license to carry revoked for open carry.  Open carry is legal.  This is prima facie evidence of the outright lie (“we’re not going to take away law-abiding people’s guns”) being perpetrated by the gun control blob of the Brady bunch, Ceasefire, the incoming Obama administration, and even the AHSA-holes. Remember, their objectives didn’t change, their semantics changed.

Note that other than noting the judge’s reversal, the article does not mention that open carry is legal in PA. (link)

Brady Center may defend county in gun-toting mom case
by MONICA VON DOBENECK, Of Our Lebanon County Bureau Thursday December 04, 2008, 5:04 PM

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence has offered free legal representation to Lebanon County to defend against the $1 million lawsuit brought by Meleanie Hain.

Hain is the Lebanon woman who wore her loaded gun on her hip to her 5-year-old daughter’s soccer game in September, causing other parents to become concerned. Lebanon County Sheriff Michael DeLeo subsequently revoked her license to carry a concealed weapon, but his decision was reversed by Lebanon County Court Judge Robert Eby.

The case has drawn national attention.

Hain sued DeLeo, the sheriff’s office and the county Nov. 24 for reimbursement of attorney’s fees, lost wages and emotional distress. Her Philadelphia area attorney, Matthew Weisberg, said Hain’s baby-sitting business fell off after the publicity and she has been ridiculed by her neighbors.

The Brady Center, based in Washington D.C., is “the nation’s largest grassroots organization leading the fight to prevent gun violence,” according to the group’s website. It is named for Jim Brady, who was wounded by a gunman along with President Ronald Reagan 25 years ago.

Lebanon County commissioners said they would have to check with attorneys and their insurance company before deciding whether to take the Brady Center up on its offer.

By the way, speaking of charged language, I can’t stand “gunman”. Notice they’re too PC to mention Hinkley’s mental illness, so he was just a “gunman”.

A Farewell Tribute to Paul Newman

(Like they say, if you don’t have anything good to say about someone, keep your thoughts to yourself. Paul Newman was the spiritual founder of today’s asshat Hollyweirdos who donate money liberally to causes like the “Free (convicted copkiller) Mumia” cause without thinking it through that even if you’re anti-death penalty, why would you want a convicted cop-killer set free?)

Group Plans Campaign Against G.O.P. Donors

By MICHAEL LUO
Published: August 7, 2008
Nearly 10,000 of the biggest donors to Republican candidates and causes across the country will probably receive a foreboding “warning” letter in the mail next week.

The letter is an opening shot across the bow from an unusual new outside political group on the left that is poised to engage in hardball tactics to prevent similar groups on the right from getting off the ground this fall.

Led by Tom Matzzie, a liberal political operative who has been involved with some prominent left-wing efforts in recent years, the newly formed nonprofit group, Accountable America, is planning to confront donors to conservative groups, hoping to create a chilling effect that will dry up contributions.

“We want to stop the Swift Boating before it gets off the ground,” said Mr. Matzzie, who described his effort as “going for the jugular.”

The warning letter is intended as a first step, alerting donors who might be considering giving to right-wing groups to a variety of potential dangers, including legal trouble, public exposure and watchdog groups digging through their lives.

The fatass in charge, Tom Matzzie got his start with the AFL-CIO.  Big surprise, huh?

GET IN MAH BELLAAY!

This is a little too close to home.  Having already had, at my castle, aggressive union-affiliated political organizers knocking at my door at 8:30 at night (despite the “no soliciting” sign), questioning me on why I won’t sign a petition to “save the planet” (with 15 different pieces of leftist legislation) or “guarantee safe products for kids” (by passing the “employee free choice act”?), I know that this probably isn’t illegal, but it sets terrible precedent.

The end-game of this effort is to stop people from expressing their political views through campaign donations, so while right now it’s writing letters to other members of the public, I consider this voter intimidation.

The fact that they’re keeping a list is more than a little disturbing. How do we know the harassment will stop at letters?  Think about how aggressive the Clinton administration was with the FBI, IRS, BATFe, and other agencies against political foes, and then consider how you’ll feel if there’s an insinuation that you’re on a list of the Obamessiah’s enemies?

Feel-Good Story of The Day: NRA “Spy”

I think this is inconsequential, because we already know that “national strategy” of groups like Ceasefire and their astroturf-grass-roots pals, but I did enjoy this story (link):

A trusted Pa. gun-control ally … and NRA spy?
By Jeff Shields

Inquirer Staff Writer

Mary McFate was the kind of volunteer the gun-control movement in Pennsylvania prized. By all accounts, she was dedicated and diligent, humble enough to stuff envelopes yet bold enough to lobby U.S. senators.
Now it seems that the CeaseFire PA board member may have been more versatile than anyone could have imagined. According to Mother Jones magazine, she was a spy for the National Rifle Association.

Mother Jones reported that McFate was in fact Mary Lou Sapone, who made headlines in the 1990 when it was revealed that she had been hired by a surgical-equipment company to infiltrate the animal-rights movement.

As McFate, the magazine reported, Sapone covertly infiltrated gun-control groups for more than a decade and received payment from private security firms and the NRA.

During that time, she inserted herself into some of the most important gun-control organizations in the country and was part of discussions on national strategy and policy.

Maybe they should have their members cross their hearts and hope to die before joining the board.

I guess this is one advantage that pro-2A groups have over others is that it’s fairly obvious if you do participate in shooting activities or don’t. Sure, someone could spy but they’d have to try harder.

More Reasons Not To Support McCain

Generally I’ve been pragmatic about elections, with the mindset that (like in 2006) I’d hold my nose and vote for the Republican candidate because ultimately it will work toward my conservative interests (Optimal Freedom Conservatism: markets open, private firearms ownership, strictly limited government interference/taxation, strong military to protect overseas commerce, secure borders, a right to life, death for proven murderers).  I found that looking back on the work of the Congress, there was nothing for me to grab onto and say I was proud of. In fact, I questioned whether they did anything that made me glad I voted for them.

Unfortunately, I have a distaste for each of the remaining GOP Presidential candidates.  I’m really not getting any satisfactory reason to vote for any of them.  Particularly McCain.  He’s courting democrat voters more than GOP! He relied on “independents” to vote for him, and you know what that means.

Michelle Malkin has a must-read about McCain’s (off-season campaign hq) Reform Institute’s ties to billionaire financier George Soros and left-wing groups like the Tides Foundation (link).

Add to that the fact that McCain and Hillary are chummy (link), and you’ve got a picture of what the campaign will look like.  McCain’s a pleaser: he likes to please the media, and will give in to be popular. If he’s a “maverick” on freedom of speech, why wouldn’t we believe he’d become a maverick on gun control?  I want my candidate to fight for our beliefs, not abandon them in exchange for comfort.

A Small Victory for Common Sense

Today was a small victory for the individual right to keep and bear arms in Pennsylvania.  Look, the gun grabbers are an enemy that will not go away.  With huge endowments of dead wealthy folks’ trust funds run by leftists, statists (both foreign and domestic) who believe the nanny state knows what’s best for you, and various others who join with them, this issue’s not going away. (link)

Gov. Ed Rendell made an impassioned plea to state lawmakers Tuesday for four bills he said would curb growing gun violence, but a legislative panel rejected two key measures in less time than he spent making his appeal.

Rendell made his rare appearance before a legislative committee largely in response to gun crimes in Philadelphia, where homicides have been occurring at a rate of more than one a day for three years running and a police officer was fatally shot three weeks ago.

The governor spent 40 minutes in front of the House Judiciary Committee before the panel rejected two bills most urgently sought by Philadelphia leaders. The panel voted 17-12 against a proposal to limit most handgun purchases to one a month and 19-10 against a measure to let local governments enact their own gun controls.

Legislators sat silent as he told them that they have the power to save lives and stop people from buying multiple handguns in stores, selling them on the street to criminals and then claiming the weapons were stolen or lost.

For 12 pieces of silver, they’re selling guns to people they know are going to use them to maim and to kill and to rob and you have to stop it and you have the power to stop some of it,” the governor said.

Rendell gestured forcefully as he spoke, his voice occasionally rising, and he slapped his hand on the table to punctuate his speech. At one point, he waved color-coded maps of the state that showed rising gun violence statistics. State police commissioner Col. Jeffrey Miller sat at his side, and he was backed by a row of dark blue uniformed officers in a packed hearing room in the state Capitol.

Republicans on the House committee lead the opposition.

“Public safety has not been a priority for this governor,” said Rep. Ronald S. Marsico of Dauphin County, the committee’s ranking Republican.

The committee did approve a bill that would set a 20-year minimum prison term for anyone who shoots at a police officer, even if the officer is not wounded.

Legislators postponed action on a fourth bill which would require gun owners to promptly report lost or stolen firearms, although the same committee rejected a similar measure earlier this year.

Pennsylvania, which has nearly 1 million licensed hunters, has always been known as a strong gun rights state. Lawmakers must balance the interests of urban communities concerned about violent crime and rural areas where the hunting tradition runs deep.

Rendell, a Democrat who served as Philadelphia’s district attorney and mayor before becoming governor nearly five years ago, has grown increasingly frustrated by the violence that has plagued his home city.

He singled out the Oct. 31 shooting death of Philadelphia Officer Chuck Cassidy — one of five city officers shot in the line of duty since Oct. 28 — as a personal turning point.

“I knew I had to do something,” he said in explaining his personal appearance before the committee.

Rendell said a deluge of illegal guns was overwhelming efforts by police and prosecutors to deal with gun violence.

“Tougher law enforcement, real tough law enforcement, hasn’t stemmed the tide,” he said.

He urged lawmakers to consider families torn apart by gun violence, rather than heeding the gun lobby.

A lobbyist for the National Rifle Association, which claims 250,000 dues-paying Pennsylvania members, praised the committee votes.

The lobbyist, John Hohenwarter, said the one-handgun-a-month proposal amounts to “rationing individual liberties,” while the bill to allow local gun ordinances would create a crazy quilt of conflicting requirements across the state.

“You could have over 2,000 different gun laws in this state, making it impossible for law-abiding citizens to comply,” he said.

Rep. John Myers, a Philadelphia Democrat who sponsored the proposed limit on handgun purchases, said urban Republicans who opposed the bill might regret their decisions if Rendell is correct that polling shows statewide support for his measure.

“They don’t want to hear what their constituents have to say,” he said outside the hearing room. “They want to hear what the NRA has to say. That’s what they believe to be the truth.”

The NRA represents their constituents, fella.

Reuters News Tilt on Full Display

Something’s missing here (link):

LONDON (Reuters) – Six years after the September 11 attacks in the United States, the “war on terror” is failing and instead fuelling an increase in support for extremist Islamist movements, a British think-tank said on Monday.

A report by the Oxford Research Group (ORG) said a “fundamental re-think is required” if the global terrorist network is to be rendered ineffective.

“If the al Qaeda movement is to be countered, then the roots of its support must be understood and systematically undercut,” said Paul Rogers, the report’s author and professor of global peace studies at Bradford University in northern England.

“Combined with conventional policing and security measures, al Qaeda can be contained and minimized but this will require a change in policy at every level.”

He described the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq as a “disastrous mistake” which had helped establish a “most valued jihadist combat training zone” for al Qaeda supporters.

The report — Alternatives to the War on Terror — recommended the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq coupled with intensive diplomatic engagement in the region, including with Iran and Syria.

In Afghanistan, Rogers also called for an immediate scaling down of military activities, an injection of more civil aid and negotiations with militia groups aimed at bringing them into the political process.

Come on! Oxford Research Group (ORG)- isn’t that a group whose objective is to resolve conflicts without military conflict?  Wouldn’t they find any use of military force to be a de facto “failure” anyway?

Who funds ORG again? (link) Oh, don’t tell me they get money from the Soros-funded Ploughshares Fund!  Or from the Ford Foundation (dead people’s money).
