Obama DOJ Priorities Becoming Clearer
Obama-appointed Attorney General Eric Holder and his troops have been hard at work, here are a few things they’ve been working on which makes one think that under Obama, justice not only has a different definition than under Bush, but far outside the mainstream:
- (link): WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has reversed a rule issued in the last days of the Bush administration that said immigrants facing deportation do not have an automatic right to an effective lawyer.Attorney General Eric Holder says he is vacating the order, issued by predecessor Michael Mukasey, and instructing the Justice Department to study whether a new rule is needed.
- (link): (From Michelle Malkin) Last week, I called the Justice Department to inquire about an unusual decision they made to dismiss default judgements in a voter intimidation lawsuit the government filed under the Bush administration against the New Black Panther Party.
- (link): (Regarding the attack on the US Army Recruiting Center) However, politics have proved obstructive to all facets of counterterrorism policy. And politics may have been at play in the Muhammad case as well as in other cases involving Black Muslim converts. Several weeks ago, STRATFOR heard from sources that the FBI and other law enforcement organizations had been ordered to “back off” of counterterrorism investigations into the activities of Black Muslim converts. At this point, it is unclear to us if that guidance was given by the White House or the Department of Justice, or if it was promulgated by the agencies themselves, anticipating the wishes of President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder.
As STRATFOR has previously noted, the FBI has a culture that is very conservative and risk-averse. Many FBI supervisors are reluctant to authorize investigations that they believe may have negative blow-back on their career advancement. In light of this institutional culture, and the order to be careful in investigations relating to Black Muslim converts, it would not be at all surprising to us if a supervisor refused to authorize a full-field investigation of Muhammad that would have included surveillance of his activities. Though in practical terms, even if a full-field investigation had been authorized, due to the caution being exercised in cases related to Black Muslim converts, the case would most likely have been micromanaged to the point of inaction by the special agent in charge of the office involved or by FBI headquarters. - (Michelle Malkin’s piece today also has this, but here’s more) (link): As a coalition of pro-immigration groups rallied at the state Capitol on Monday, Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel was reacting to a U.S. Justice Department repudiation of her system of verifying citizenship of voters.
In a six-page letter issued last week, and released Monday, Justice Department lawyers said Handel’s office had created a system that “does not produce accurate and reliable information and that thousands of citizens who are in fact eligible to vote under Georgia law have been flagged.”
Handel was not pleased. The decision, she said, “shows a shocking disregard for the integrity of our elections.”
Handel and her aides created the system in 2007 under the requirements of the federal Help America Vote Act. The law requires states to verify a voter’s identity at the time of registration, but not necessarily to verify citizenship. In creating the system, Handel’s office extended the verification process to include citizenship —- something the Justice Department said was “discretionary on the state’s part.”
But the system that was created, the federal lawyers found, was flawed and of the 7,000 individuals flagged as potential “non-citizens,” more than 50 percent were actually U.S. citizens.
Furthermore, the department found, those flagged as non-citizens were overwhelmingly black, Asian or Hispanic.
“These burdens are real, are substantial and are retrogressive for minority voters,” Loretta King, the acting assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, said in a letter to the state.
The ruling bars the state from continuing the citizenship verification, although there is some dispute as to whether the original verification for identification can continue.(ed-) Instead of helping them verify citizenship, the feds are prohibiting them from trying, with cries of “racism”. Here’s what the Georgia voter application looks like (link). Imagine that, the federal government spends billions of dollars on software, and cannot keep a file on who’s a citizen. I mean, unless you want to purchase a firearm… - Special protections for Obama’s chosen people (link): Statement of Attorney General Eric Holder on Department of Justice’s Outreach and Enforcement Efforts to Protect American Muslims
WASHINGTON, June 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder released the following statement relating to President Obama’s historic speech today in Cairo, Egypt:
“The President’s pledge for a new beginning between the United States and the Muslim community takes root here in the Justice Department where we are committed to using criminal and civil rights laws to protect Muslim Americans. A top priority of this Justice Department is a return to robust civil rights enforcement and outreach in defending religious freedoms and other fundamental rights of all of our fellow citizens in the workplace, in the housing market, in our schools and in the voting booth.
“There are those who will continue to want to divide by fear - to pit our national security against our civil liberties - but that is a false choice. We have a solemn responsibility to protect our people while we also protect our principles.”Note that Holder refers to “religious and other fundamental rights”. The left doesn’t believe that the 2nd Amendment is a fundamental right, that’s legalese for “you have no Second Amendment rights”. More importantly, the statement assumes that Muslims have been treated unequitably. - In addition to calling the US a “nation of cowards” with regard to race and helping to propagate the “90% of cartels’ weapons (somehow including full auto rifles and grenades) come from US private sales” lie, Obama AG Holder also was responsible for the release of the CIA Interrogation memos (link) at the behest of the ACLU and terrorists’ best friend Center for Constitutional Rights.
The DOJ is now a radical enforcer of political correctness.
